Hernia repair
OVERVIEW
Hernia repair involves a surgical intervention aimed at rectifying a hernia, a condition characterised by the protrusion of an organ or tissue through a vulnerable area or gap in the adjacent muscles or connective tissues. Hernias commonly occur in the abdominal wall but can also develop in other areas of the body, such as the groin, upper thigh, or belly button. Dr Stefan Botes performs hernia surgery to repair both primary hernias (such as inguinal or umbilical hernias) as well as incisional hernias from previous operations.
- Inguinal hernia: This is a hernia that occurs in the groin area. It occurs when a section of the intestine or abdominal tissue pushes through a weak spot or opening in the lower abdominal wall near the inguinal canal.
- Umbilical hernia: This is a hernia that occurs around the belly button (navel) area. It occurs when there is a weak spot or opening in the abdominal muscles, and abdominal tissue or organs protrude through this opening, causing a bulge near the belly button.
- Incisional hernia: This particular hernia manifests specifically at the location of a prior incision made during abdominal surgery. It happens when the tissue or organs protrude through a weakened or separated area of the abdominal wall near the surgical scar. This occurs because the incision weakens the surrounding tissues, making them more prone to herniation.
PROCEDURE
To ensure a pain-free hernia surgery, sedation will be administered before the procedure begins. During the hernia repair, Dr Botes will undertake the following steps:
- Realign the bulging tissue or organ to its proper position.
- Mend the weakened area or opening in the muscle.
- In some cases, employ surgical mesh to reinforce and cover the hernia
Hernia repair can be performed using two methods: Surgical procedures can be conducted through either open surgery or minimally invasive techniques, such as laparoscopic methods. The choice between these approaches depends on factors such as the type and size of the hernia, as well as any additional risk factors associated with your overall health. It is important to note that both options carry a risk of hernia recurrence.

FAQ
What is a hernia?
When muscles or connective tissues in the vicinity develop a weak spot or opening, a hernia arises as a result of the protrusion of an organ or tissue through that area.
What is the recovery time after hernia repair surgery?
The duration of recovery varies from person to person and is influenced by the specific surgical method employed. In general, patients can expect to gradually resume normal activities within a few weeks, but it's important to follow the surgeon's post-operative instructions for a successful recovery.
Are there any risks or complications associated with hernia repair surgery?
Like any surgery, hernia repair carries some risks, including infection, bleeding, damage to nearby structures, hernia recurrence, or complications related to anaesthesia. However, serious complications are relatively rare.
