Small bowel and colon resection

OVERVIEW

Small bowel and colon resection surgeries are the surgical removals of the small bowel or colon if it is diseased or obstructed. Depending on the case, certain surgeries may only target a small portion, whereas other resections may encompass more extensive sections.

The small bowel, measuring approximately 200-300cm in length, comprises multiple layers of tissue that intertwine and fold. This vital organ is responsible for absorbing nutrients from the food you consume. Generally, removing a segment of tissue does not significantly impact the functionality of the intestine.

There are several conditions that can cause damage to the small bowel. In instances where the damage is severe, Dr Botes may suggest the removal of a portion of your small bowel. Some of the conditions that may necessitate surgery are:

  • Possible complications include bleeding, infection, or severe ulcers occurring in the small intestine as well as intestinal blockage, which can result from either congenital factors present at birth or the development of scar tissue.
  • Non-cancerous tumours.
  • Precancerous polyps.
  • Cancer.
  • Injuries to the small intestine.
  • Meckel's diverticulum, which is a congenital pouch in the intestine.

PROCEDURE

Small bowel resection surgery necessitates the use of general anaesthesia to ensure that you are unconscious and free from pain throughout the operation. There are two primary types of small bowel resection: open surgery and laparoscopic surgery.

  • Open Surgery: In open surgery, Dr Botes creates an abdominal incision. The size and placement are determined by multiple factors, such as the precise location of the issue and your individual body structure.
  • Laparoscopic Surgery: In laparoscopic or robotic surgery, three to five smaller incisions are made. The surgeon begins by inflating your abdomen with gas to enhance visibility. They then utilise miniature lights, cameras, and small instruments to locate, clamp off, and remove the affected area. In some cases, a robot may be employed to assist in the surgery. It is crucial to have an experienced laparoscopic surgeon perform this type of procedure.

Sympathy is no substitute for action.
